Cherokee Sisters--Mattie and Clara

Mattie and Clara are daughters of Andrew Hampton (son of Elizabeth Jones Hampton). They half sisters--Mattie's mother is Marinda Huckaby; Clara's mother is Lily Armstrong. Mattie Jane Hampton was born Oct. 7, 1875 and Clara was born about 1882.  Andrew Hampton's third wife was Mary Susan Carpenter--sister of the Three sisters' Grandmother, Martha Jane Carpenter.

Elizabeth Jones Hampton was the daughter of James Jones and Mary Standridge born about 1823 in Tennessee, probably Marion County. She came to Arkansas with her family in the late 1820s or early 1830. She married Andrew Hampton, son of Joel Hampton and Elizabeth Page, before 1850. Andrew died during the Civil War. Elizabeth was readmitted to the Cherokee Nation in 1888. She is on the "Old Settler" Roll.

Andrew Hampton And Family

Andrew Hampton married three times: first to Marinda Huckaby; second to Lily Armstrong; and third to Mary Susan Carpenter Jones. He had children by each wife. His Marinda and Lily died. We know Lily had consumption.

Elizabeth Jones Hampton was the daughter of James Jones and Mary Standridge born about 1823 in Tennessee, probably Marion County. She came to Arkansas with her family in the late 1820s and early 1830s. She married Andrew Hampton, son of Joel Hampton and Elizabeth Page, before 1850. Andrew died during the Civil War. Elizabeth was readmitted to the Cherokee Nation in 1888. She is on the "Old Settler" Roll.

Andrew W. Hampton was born on May 10, 1849, in Carroll, Arkansas, his father, Andrew, was 24 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 28. He was married three times and had one son and four daughters. He died on December 12, 1917, in Oklahoma at the age of 68.

Martin Hampton Jones

This picture was shared with me by Vineta Wingate and was given to her by Coowesta Ann Colby of Vinita, OK. Martin R. Jones sometimes went by Hampton. He was born to Elizabeth Jones before she married Andrew Hampton. Martin Jones born about 1842 died Feb. 21, 1875 at Seneca, Newton MO. He married Frances Ann Witherspoon Oct. 16, 1865 in Green Co. MO. She was born September 26, 1846 in Catawba County, North Carolina died Oct. 15, 1928 in Denver, Carroll, AR , Frances parents were Hyle (Hoyle) Brown Witherspoon and Polly (Mary Susan) Carpenter. Martin had these children Theodore, Mary Elizabeth, Caldona and Margaret Charlotte Jones.

The story has been passed down that Elizabeth Jones had two children before she married. Martin was one of these. She had a second son before her marriage to Hampton.   His name was John.  He is dead by the time of the Old Settler payment.  When the Cherokee Sisters were readmitted to the Cherokee Nation, they named their relatives that they could!  John was not named as he was already deceased.  At one time a genealogist tried to claim John as alive, but finally I think I have made sure not believed what they said.  Elizabeth Jones in on the 1860 Carroll County, AR census and John is dead by then.  She is married to Andrew Hampton by 1850.

According to her Indian Records, Martin Jones only had the kids by Fannie Witherspoon. Fannie's mother was a sister to Betty Renfroe's and Fleta Aday's Great (many) Grandfather William Wesley Carpenter. Martin Jackson Jones (this Martin's first cousin) married Wm. Wesley Carpenter's daughter Mary Susan Carpenter. So Martin's ancestors are related to both Betty Renfroe and her husband as are the ancestors of Mary Susan Carpenter (first cousin to Frances Witherspoon) and Andy Hampton!!!

Cherokee Sisters--Mary White and Elizabeth Hampton

 Mary Jones White and Elizabeth Jones Hampton--Cherokee Sisters--1/16 Cherokee!

These  Cherokee Sisters share the genes of James Jones, Cherokee, and Mary Standridge, white daughter of Alexander Standridge. They were Old Settlers, coming to Arkansas by the early 1830s. When they applied to be readmitted to the Cherokee Nation, they listed many of their relatives giving us a multitude of information for our family search today.

Elizabeth Jones Hampton, Cherokee

Elizabeth is the granddaughter of OLD Alexander Standridge, the daughter of Mary Standridge Jones, the neice of Rhoda Blevins, Martin, John, Lemuel, and Samuel James Standridge. She was at least 1/16 Cherokee.

She is on the "Old Settler" Roll. This picture was probably taken in the Cherokee Nation between 1890 and her death.

Jill sweatman stated that the picture was given to Mattie Jane Hampton Sweatman (Jill's Great Grandmother), and she gave it to her daughter, Flossie May Sweatman, who passed it to her son, Flavious Cornelius O'Gara Jr. and he shared a copy with Jill. Now Jill has shared with me and I hope to share with many other Jones/Hampton/Standridge researchers


7 January 1830 affidavit in James Jones’s claim begins: “We certify that James Jones is one eighth Cherokee, about thirty years of age, and about five feet Ten inches high.” The certification for John Jones, carrying the same date, also states that he was one-eighth Cherokee, about 5’9” and 20 years of age.

James in 1850, said he was older than this.  He says he is 1/8 Cherokee.  Elizabeth was 1/4.  Mollie was 1/2.  Mollie Welch's mother and Cherokee mate of James Welch would have been a full blood!  This makes Elizabeth Jones--1/16th and her children 1/32 Cherokee.
