Cherokee Sisters--Mattie and Clara

Mattie and Clara are daughters of Andrew Hampton (son of Elizabeth Jones Hampton). They half sisters--Mattie's mother is Marinda Huckaby; Clara's mother is Lily Armstrong. Mattie Jane Hampton was born Oct. 7, 1875 and Clara was born about 1882.  Andrew Hampton's third wife was Mary Susan Carpenter--sister of the Three sisters' Grandmother, Martha Jane Carpenter.

Elizabeth Jones Hampton was the daughter of James Jones and Mary Standridge born about 1823 in Tennessee, probably Marion County. She came to Arkansas with her family in the late 1820s or early 1830. She married Andrew Hampton, son of Joel Hampton and Elizabeth Page, before 1850. Andrew died during the Civil War. Elizabeth was readmitted to the Cherokee Nation in 1888. She is on the "Old Settler" Roll.

Andrew Hampton And Family

Andrew Hampton married three times: first to Marinda Huckaby; second to Lily Armstrong; and third to Mary Susan Carpenter Jones. He had children by each wife. His Marinda and Lily died. We know Lily had consumption.

Andrew W. Hampton was born on May 10, 1849, in Carroll, Arkansas, his father, Andrew, was 24 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 28. He was married three times and had one son and four daughters. He died on December 12, 1917, in Oklahoma at the age of 68.

These  Cherokee Sisters share the genes of James Jones, Cherokee, and Mary Standridge, white daughter of Alexander Standridge. They were Old Settlers, coming to Arkansas by the early 1830s. When they applied to be readmitted to the Cherokee Nation, they listed many of their relatives giving us a multitude of information for our family search today.
