Tate DNA connections we have found point to one Henry Tate [1712 New Kent County VA - 1793 Campbell VA] being an ancestor of our Thomas W. Tate. This Henry Tate's wife was Sarah Netherland. Henry's will identified several children including Jesse and Calab Tate.
WILL OF HENRY TATE
CAMPBELL COUNTY, VIRGINIA

IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN. I, HENRY TATE of the Parish of
Russell and county of Campbell, being at this time in perfect health of body
and soundness of mind, but considering the uncertainty of life and being
desirous to prevent any dispute- among my children after my decease do make and
ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following.
I render up my soul to God who gave it whom this the merits
of Jesus Christ I hope to have full pardon and forgiveness for all my sins done
in the body and my body to be buried in a decent Christian manner, and any
worldly goods wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me- i give and bequeath in
manner following.
First I give to my executors one negro woman slave named
Patti with her increase for the use following [to wit] that is I have lent the
said negro to my daughter-MARY DAVIS wife of CHESLEY DAVIS they shall allow her
to keep possession of the said negro during my said daughter's natural life to
her own use and behoos[sic] and that immediately on my daughter's decease they
take into their possession the said negro and her increase and account to the
children she may or has had by the said CHESLEY DAVIS for the profit of the
said negro and increase until the Eldest of the Children comes of age or
marries and that then they shall divide the negro aforesaid and her increase
among the said children or as many of them as are living or if that for any
reason in impracticable that they sell the said Negro and increase to the best
advantage and divide the sum arising from the sale among said children
aforesaid.
Item- I give and bequeath to my daughter SARAH CALLAWAY what
she hath already had
Item- I give and bequeath to my daughter TABITHA CALLAWAY'S
children JAMES and ELIZABETH CALLAWAY the increase of negro woman called Nann
formerly given to my Deceased daughter to be equally divided between them and
their Heirs forever after the death of their father.
Item- I give an bequeath to my Eldest son JESSE TATE one
negro woman named Hannah with her increase to him and his Heirs forever.
Item- I give and bequeath to my son CHARLES TATE one negro
woman nam'd[sic] Sue with her increase to him and his Heirs forever.
Item- I give and bequeath to my daughter ELIZA HARRISS [sic]
one negro man named Tom to her and her Heirs forever.
Item- I give and bequeath to my daughter ANNE ANTHONY one
negro man named Blackmon to her and her Heirs forever.
Item- I give and bequeath to my son NATHANIEL TATE one negro
man named John to him and his Heirs forever.
Item- I give and bequeath to my son EDMUND TATE one negro
man named Will to him and his Heirs forever.
Item- I give and bequeath to my son CALEB TATE one Negro man
named James to him and his Heirs forever.
Item- I give and bequeath to my daughter EUPHAM TATE two
negros named Polk and Randall to her and her Heirs forever; together with what
I have already given her.
Item- I give and bequeath to my daughter SARAH HENRY TATE
one negro woman named Mollie with her increse to her and her Heirs forever.
Item- I give and to my beloved wife SARAH TATE during her
widowhood in life of her dower five negos namely Robin, Young Robin, Bob, Jude
and Jemmy five together with the land whereon I now live, with the plantation
the use of the houses and appurtenances to the said land belonging and after
her decease or on her marriage my Will is that the said Land whereon I now live
shall be the property of the two youngest sons EDMUND and CALEB TATE with the
plantation houses Mill and all the appurtenances to the said land belonging
aforesaid.
My Land on Goose Creek my Will is that one half thereon
shall be the property of my son NATHANIEL TATE and the other and lower part
there to be the property of CHARLES TATE, my Will is that the five negros last
mentioned be sold by the Execuutors provided the negros can be bought among my
children two fifths of the money arising from such sale to be given to my
youngest daughter SARAH HENRY TATE and the balance equally divided among my
children hereafter named.
[VIZ] ANNE ANTHONY, EDMUND and CALEB TATE, my other children
living provided to the utmost of my ability by the bequest I herein mentioned
to them, and my Will and desire is that all my personal Estate not herein
before disposed of remain in the possessionof my wife during her widowhood and
and after her marriage or decease to be sold by Executors for the use of my
children above last mentioned and the money arising from the sale thereas to be
divided among them in manner last mentioned, and should it be at anmy
time-appear that my stock of Horse and Cattle be to great a number to keep
without charge, it is my desire that the superflous part thereof be sold by my
Executors hereafter mentioned and the money arising to be divided among my
children above last mentioned in manner aforesaid.
I appoint my lovng wife SARAH TATE and my sons EDMUND and
CALEB TATE- Executors of this my Last Will and Tesament hereby revoking all
former Wills by me heretofore made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my
hand and seal this day-

Easther, I give to my loving wife Sarah Tate during her life and widowhood as
the rest of the others hretofore left with all moneys due to me-over and above
paying my just debts and funeral Sermon, The said negroe and increase after her
decease to be equally divided among Ann Anthony, Edmund Tate and Caleb Tate.

At A court held for Campbell County September 5th 1793- The
within Last Will and Testament of Henry Tayte Deceased together with the
Codicils thereon endorsed were proved by the Oaths of Sarah Williamson andAnn
Williamson, to w of the Witnesses herto subscribed and Ordered to be recorded
and on the Motionof Edmund Tate and Caleb Tate the Executors therein named who
made Oath thereto as the aw directs certificate to be granted them for
obtaining probate thereof in due form-giving security Whereupon they together
with James Callaway and Joseph Anthony their Securities ordered into and
acknowledged their Bond in the penalty of one Thousand five hundred poounds
conditioned according to law for the said Executors due and faithfully
administration of the said Decendents Estate and performance of his
Will--Liberty being reserved the Executrix in the said Will being named to join
in the Probate thereof when she shall think.
