The Red Head...

I stole this from here
https://www.eupedia.com/genetics/origins_of_red_hair.shtml

Red hair is a recessive genetic trait caused by a series of mutations in the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R), a gene located on chromosome 16. As a recessive trait it must be inherited from both parents to cause the hair to become red. Consequently there are far more people carrying the mutation for red hair than people actually having red hair. In Scotland, approximately 13% of the population are redheads, although 40% carry at least one mutation.

Letter from 1950 about John Powell of Caswell County, NC

Charles Powell's brother John lived in Caswell County, NC.  This letter was written by a descendant of his almost 200 years after he lived!  I had the contents of the letter but here is the original letter!  The letter was written in Lineville, AL by Eugie Dobson, daughter of Joseph and Nancy Adalee Smith Dobson. Relayed to her by her Uncle Andrew Smith, the son of Jeptha and Nancy Smith.

What does it suggest.  John Powell and Margaret McDonald Powell had children named Mary, James, Charles, John, Judith, Nancy, Peggy and Martha!  He was originally from Virginia and was a first cousin to George Washington!   Duke Whalebone would have been the man who purchased poor Margaret on the docks when she arrived in America.

Tony's On The Big Hunt Now!

Tony's on the Big Hunt Now!

Ole Ton was home a huntin', just a thinkin' about nuffin'
Always slow drivin', after dark had gathered round
The moon above the mountain, it seemed to be acountin'
A million little coon eyes lookin' down!

Have you ever stopped to ponder about all those stars up yonder
Maybe bein' coon eyes lined up on a fence
Well, the thought it got me going, and the idea kept a growin'
And I have felt a little better ever since!

Well, that Foreman way up yonder, he's really quite a wonder
He'll show you grace and teach you how to mourn!
And any night you're a gazin', you'll see the coon eyes grazin'
In the Foreman's Milky Way of corn!

And somehow I keep thinkin', as I watch those eyes a blinkin'
About ole Ton--he bein' wise and some to spare!
His gold chariot's in the corn fields with old Maggie chasing coon heels
Serving that Great Foreman a huntin' coon up there!

Uncle Richard--he's a driving and Billy Joe's contrivin'
Directing where to turn when there's no need.
Ole Ton, he's riding shot gun, ribbin' both but just for fun
Til they hear him shout, " Maggie's treed!"

Their chariot burns across the heavens, with not even one misgivin'
As they pile that vector with their ringtail catch
The Great Foreman's whoopin' loudly, as He rewards the hunters proudly
For protecting that great Milky Way corn patch!

Poor Dead People

I am so pleased our dead people websites were resurrected.  There are some things that we placed on these websites that I can no  longer find on my computer.  If I still have the picture below on my computer, I would have no idea where to look for it.  It was sent to me by an old friend Vinita Terherst.  Vinita's grandmother and Dillard Poor's grandmother were sisters.  These families all lived in the Denver/Omaha area.

This is Kelly Poor's grandfather Lewis Poor.  Looks just like Kelly to me.

This is brothers Noah Poor and Lewis Poor as young boys.  Lewis was born in 1881, Noah in 1879 at Frisco, Crawford County, Arkansas.
Leonard Atchison--Allie Atchison Poor's brother!  Below is Leonard and his wife, Myra Stacy Atchison!

 Andy Atchison's father--John!  Allie Atchison Poor's grandfather.
Allie Poor's mother Lanora Jackson Atchison, Andy's wife!
Below is Emma Atchison Peebles--Andy's Sister--Dillard's Great Aunt!

Lemuel Owen Standridge

When Lemuel Owen Standridge was born on December 23, 1856, in Arkansas, his father, Lemuel, was 42 and his mother, Peggy, was 36. He married Eugenia Arnold and they had three children together. He then married Nancy Jane Freeman and they had nine children together. He died on March 11, 1929, at the age of 72.

In 1912, Noah Standridge was arrested for moonshining in the foot-hills of the Boston Mountains, 55 miles north of Russellville by Deputy John Burris. Owen Standridge and his son Jim were said to be owners of the still, which was destroyed by the Burris Posse. They escaped arrest. They were sleeping in the hog pen near their house, and made their escape under the cover of two shot-guns pointed in the direction of Deptuy Collector, W. F. Freeman, with the general command, "STAND BACK! Advance another step and we will fire." The two mountaineers escaped and two were captured (Noah Standridge and Louis Gunter). (Courier Democrat, June 13, 1912.)

Pulling the shot gun on the Burris Posse sent Lemuel Owen Standridge to the Georgia Penitentiary--his sentence was for a year and a day!  He served each day without early parole!

More Letters From Mother to Son--1911 through 1915

Eugenia Arnold Standridge married Lemuel Owen Standridge in 1981.  They had two sons--Oscar Love and Buchanan Standridge.   In the fall of 1885, Eugenia decided to leave her husband.    She lived surrounded by his kin.  The story was told that Lemuel Owen said she could go, but Oscar and Buck could not!  In her letters, Eugenia says she made her get away in October of 1885.  She was excepting a child.  She left two with Lemuel Owen Standridge but carried one away with her.  She told family that she gave birth in the train station in Dover to Frank Standridge.  She married and moved to the Dakotas and then to Washington state.  Her last years were spent in Whittier, California!  She never saw Oscar or Buck Standridge after she left Ben Hur, AR in 1885.

Oscar Love Standridge and his wife Nina Jones Standridge

Eugenia begged for her son to go have his photo made and to send her his image.  She had not seen him since he was about 4 years old.  He and Nina had this picture made and sent it to his mother, Eugenia!
I think Eugenia likely sent her image to Oscar and Nina--maybe this one!
Below-- this photo was taken probably in Rapid City I would guess about 1905. Starting at far left, family friend (as labeled in book), sitting next: Edwin A. Wight, standing rear:John F.
