Pine Tree's descendants have claimed over and over that she was native American, but DNA has proven otherwise.  She appears to be dark in the picture but she was NOT Indian.

  4. She was my third great-grandmother. I think she was a Melungeon/Cherokee mix. Her daughter-in-law Lydia Standridge was the daughter of a woman with the maiden name Blevins, and Lydia's photograph clearly shows her necklace and belt are Native American. Melungeons are tri-racial: white, black and native American. I have no doubt that Martha was part native. That was not a lie someone would tell back then but it was perceived better to just say Cherokee than Melungeon because that meant admitting one was partially black. She was a mixed-race person whose mixed-race son Charles Artur married the (also mixed-race) Blevins-Standridge girl. People of color typically married others with similar ethnic backgrounds in those times. Look up the surname Blevins on the Dawes Rolls and there are a lot of them listed, "Cherokee by Blood." Cherokee were already mixed-race via outcast Moorish subjects (deported Jews?) long before the English and French arrived on the North American shores ;) I consider myself both a Cherokee and Melungeon descendent and the different interpretations of my DNA test results support that conclusion. One says European/Middle Eastern and the other says European/Iberian/African. I've done my genealogy back to the Normans on all other branches of family and Martha Pine Tree Cagle is the only person that non-European dna could have come from. Thanks for reading.

  5. Hi, cousins. I am also a descendant of Martha Pine Tree Cagle through Charles Arter and Mary Tilley Cagle. I've had my DNA done on Ancestry and on Family Tree DNA. Both used to show East Asia as part of my DNA and that would be the Native genes, which could only have come from Martha Pine Tree. However, they keep changing the results, so that doesn't even show up anymore. However, DNA is "scientific entertainment", meaning it isn't really all that accurate at determining origins. I would love to hear anyone else's stories of Martha Pine Tree.
